GOODREADS

Thief or gentleman, he is uniquely dangerous!

Governess Matty Mather has grown to love her pupils of the Dove family. When a borrowed ring is stolen from Catherine Dove and her friend, now in their first London Season, the redoubtable Matty goes alone to Maida Pleasure Gardens to confront the thief – who turns out to be outrageous, charming and utterly mysterious.

Francisco de Salgado has been long employed by the British government to take care of insoluble problems, both home and abroad. Returning to England to resign before he loses his soul entirely, he accepts one final mission that he regards as both foolish and beneath him. Making a rare mistake, he returns to Maida to right it – only to be faced with a severe young woman demanding he return the ring he stole.

So begins an attraction that is both unwise and irresistible. Mutual suspicion dissolves eventually into an alliance to discover who is behind a plot to overthrow the British government and why. And the eventual solution will involve several old friends from the previous Pleasure Garden books.

Miss Matty Mathers is very happy in her work as a governess,  much to the dismay of her mother and sister.  One of the girls she looks after comes to her with a problem.  Hopefully Matty can help her.
Mr Francis has worked for the English Crown for many years, even though England is not the land of his birth.  He can blend into many situations. Our hero is feeling the pressure from his way of life and gets a little careless.
A very exciting historical romance with a mystery to solve.  This book is part of a series and if you have read any of the previous stories you will recognise some of the characters.  However you can easily enjoy each book on it's own.  They are all full of fabulous characters and lots fun.
I have loved all of them.

Mary Lancaster's first love was historical fiction. Since then she has grown to love coffee, chocolate, red wine and black and white films - simultaneously where possible. She hates housework.

As a direct consequence of the first love, she studied history at St. Andrews University, after which she worked variously as editorial assistant, researcher and librarian. Although she has always written stories for her own entertainment, she began to make serious efforts toward publication in order to distract herself from a job she disliked. She now writes full time at her seaside home in Scotland, which she shares with her husband and three children.

Love at first smile…

Charmingly wicked, Johnny Winter has spent his adulthood drifting from scandal to scandal. However, inheriting the dukedom of Dearham has him considering his responsibilities, one of which is to right the wrong done to a distant cousin twenty years ago. His search takes him to Maida Pleasure Gardens, where he is distracted by an unusual and intriguing beauty.

The first time Kitty saw the gentleman with the bone-melting smile, she lost her heart.

When, more than a year later, she finally dances with him, the moment is spoiled by having to tie him up at gunpoint. For Kitty is the niece of the infamous Bill Renwick, who owns Maida Gardens and lives too close to the edges of the law. And Johnny has seen too much.

So begins an impossible attraction – made all the more dangerous by the duke’s belief that she is his long-lost relation.

Torn between the only family she knows and her longing for the duke, Kitty’s quandary is taken out of her hands by an attempt on her life. Learning to be a lady in the duke’s household brings further complications, not least her increasing obsession with her unconventional host, the man behind the mask he shows the world.

The duke sees beyond the mystery of Kitty’s origins, but can she? And having finally found the love of his life, can he keep her safe and still find a way for them to be together?

Johnny Winter,  Duke of Dearham is searching for long lost cousin, to repair an injustice. The clues have led him to a very interesting place.  Our hero is a very down to earth man who is just as comfortable in the company of farmers and tradesmen as he is the Lords and Ladies of Society.
Kitty Renwick works in Maida Gardens for her uncle.  This is a place of entertainment, with music,  jugglers and masquerade balls. Her very protective uncle only allows her to work the day times because the evening crowd are not all respectable.  That of course makes her want to be there.  Our heroine is an honest, intelligent and kind young woman who loves her family.
This is a fascinating historical romance filled with fun,  lovely characters and a mystery to solve.  We have met some of our characters in previous books,  but if you haven't read them it won't stop you enjoying this one. I have read all the books in this series and I want to step back in time to go to Maida Gardens it seems like a really exciting place.
I loved it.
